Iran Imposes Transit Controls in Hormuz, Requires Vessel Authorization
(MENAFN) Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority announced Wednesday the creation of a supervised maritime zone in the Strait of Hormuz, requiring all ships passing through the strategic passage to coordinate with the authority and receive prior approval before transit.
In a statement released on X, the authority detailed the geographic limits of the newly established monitoring area within the vital shipping corridor.
According to the announcement, the controlled zone stretches from Kuh-e Mubarak in Iran to areas south of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates at the eastern side of the strait. On the western side, it extends from the edge of Iran’s Qeshm Island to Umm al-Quwain in the UAE.
The authority also shared a map showing the boundaries of the designated maritime area.
Tensions across the region have continued to intensify since US and Israeli strikes targeted Iran in February. Tehran later responded with attacks aimed at Israel and American allies in the Gulf region, alongside the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
