UK Health Secretary Steps Down After Election Defeat Pressure

(MENAFN) According to reports, UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting has resigned amid increasing political pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer following the government’s election defeat.

In his resignation letter, Streeting said he no longer has confidence in Starmer’s leadership, criticizing the direction of the government.

"Where we need vision, we have a vacuum. Where we need direction, we have drift," he said in a letter shared on the US social media platform X.

He further stated, "It is now clear that you will not lead the Labour Party into the next general election."

Streeting also called for what he described as a broader internal contest of ideas, saying it should include a wide field of candidates.

It comes amid reports that he had been preparing a potential leadership challenge against Starmer, who is facing growing pressure from lawmakers calling for his resignation. Earlier this week, four junior ministers also stepped down from their government positions.
