Germany’s Merz Calls on Iran to Return to Negotiating Table
(MENAFN) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called on Iran Friday to immediately return to the negotiating table with Washington and reinforced Berlin's insistence that Tehran cease its interference with commercial shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz.
Merz disclosed the diplomatic exchange in a social media post, revealing he held a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump during his return flight from China. The two leaders addressed escalating concerns over Iran and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
"We agree: Iran must come to the negotiating table now," Merz said of his talks with Trump.
The German Chancellor went further, issuing a pointed warning over Tehran's nuclear ambitions and its role in one of the world's most critical maritime corridors.
"It must open the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran must not be allowed to have nuclear weapons," he added.
Beyond the Iran crisis, Merz confirmed the two leaders aligned on pathways toward a peaceful resolution in Ukraine, with both sides coordinating their stances ahead of the forthcoming NATO summit scheduled to take place in Ankara, Turkey.
"The US and Germany are strong partners in a strong NATO," he said.
The high-level exchange signals growing urgency among Western allies to consolidate a unified front on two of the most volatile geopolitical flashpoints currently threatening global stability.
