Indian-Flagged Vessel Sinks After Attack Off Oman, Crew Rescued

(MENAFN) An Indian-flagged vessel has sunk after coming under attack off the coast of Oman, with all crew members safely rescued, according to Indian officials.

The incident involved an Indian dhow named Haji Ali, which was traveling from Somalia to Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates when it was targeted in Omani waters on Wednesday morning, a senior official from India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways said in comments to reporters.

The attack reportedly caused a fire onboard, eventually leading to the vessel sinking offshore. Authorities confirmed that all 14 crew members were rescued by the Omani Coast Guard and taken to Dibba Port in Oman.

Officials described the incident as “unacceptable” and stressed that maritime safety and freedom of navigation must be protected. In a separate statement, India’s External Affairs Ministry said it “deplore[s] the fact that commercial shipping and civilian mariners continue to be targeted,” while confirming that the crew was safe.

“We deplore the fact that commercial shipping and civilian mariners continue to be targeted,” the statement said, adding that “Targeting commercial shipping and endangering innocent civilian crew members, or otherwise impeding freedom of navigation and commerce, should be avoided.”

According to additional maritime security reports, a separate vessel was also reportedly seized by unidentified individuals near the UAE coast and redirected toward Iranian territorial waters, about 38 nautical miles northeast of Fujairah.
