Indian Vessel Sinks After Attack Near Oman, Crew Safely Rescued
(MENAFN) An Indian-flagged vessel has sunk following an attack off the coast of Oman, with all crew members rescued safely, according to Indian authorities.
The vessel, an Indian dhow named *Haji Ali*, was traveling from Somalia to Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates when it came under attack in Omani waters on Wednesday morning, a senior official from India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways said while briefing reporters in New Delhi.
The incident reportedly caused a fire onboard, which ultimately led to the ship sinking offshore. Officials confirmed that all 14 crew members were rescued by the Omani Coast Guard and transported to Dibba Port in Oman.
Authorities in India described the incident as “unacceptable” and emphasized concerns over the continued targeting of commercial shipping. In a statement, India’s External Affairs Ministry said it “deplore[s] the fact that commercial shipping and civilian mariners continue to be targeted,” while confirming that the crew was safe.
“We deplore the fact that commercial shipping and civilian mariners continue to be targeted,” the statement said, adding that “Targeting commercial shipping and endangering innocent civilian crew members, or otherwise impeding freedom of navigation and commerce, should be avoided.”
Separately, maritime security reports indicated that another vessel was reportedly seized by unidentified individuals near the UAE coast and directed toward Iranian territorial waters, around 38 nautical miles northeast of Fujairah, according to UK Maritime Trade Operations.
