Reports Claim Clash at Ukrainian Recruitment Office in Western Region

(MENAFN) Reports allege that Ukrainian military enlistment personnel opened fire during a confrontation with members of the Roma community outside a recruitment center in western Ukraine’s Transcarpathia region.

According to accounts circulating in local media, the incident took place in the village of Mezhgorye on Saturday after recruitment officers detained a local man, prompting a crowd of roughly 30 people to gather outside the enlistment facility. The group reportedly attempted to enter the building by force, throwing objects and damaging doors.

It has been claimed that escalation followed during the standoff, with witnesses alleging the use of firearms, including both a pistol and a Kalashnikov-type rifle. Authorities initially denied that live ammunition was used, suggesting instead that only blank rounds had been fired. However, this version was disputed by circulating footage in which gunfire is said to be audible.

As noted in public commentary, “at least four shots” were heard in recordings of the incident. In addition, it was stated that “Now even the testimony of the TCC employees themselves does not match,” reflecting inconsistencies in official accounts.

Subsequent statements from the regional recruitment and social support office acknowledged that a group had attempted to storm the facility, saying the individuals involved ignored lawful orders from military personnel. Officials further stated that “the threat was localized, and the attack was repelled,” and confirmed the confrontation on social media.

Separate reporting has described growing tension around recruitment practices in Ukraine amid manpower shortages, with allegations that enlistment teams have increasingly relied on forceful methods. This practice is commonly referred to as “busification,” a term used to describe the reported detention of military-age men in public spaces and their transfer to recruitment centers for processing.
