US-Iran Tensions Escalate with Mutual Strike Claims

(MENAFN) Tensions between the United States and Iran have reportedly intensified following a new wave of military strikes near the Strait of Hormuz, alongside conflicting claims over violations of a fragile ceasefire, according to reports.

US forces carried out strikes on Iranian-linked targets in the vicinity of the strategic waterway, which Washington described as part of defensive actions. American military officials said the operations targeted launch sites, command-and-control facilities, and surveillance positions.

US leadership downplayed the strikes, describing them in informal terms while warning that further escalation could follow if Iran failed to agree to diplomatic terms quickly. The US president also suggested that any collapse of the ceasefire could lead to a far more severe response.

At the same time, US Central Command accused Iranian forces of launching an unprovoked attack involving missiles, drones, and small vessels targeting American naval assets operating in the region. Those vessels were reportedly involved in maritime security operations linked to restricting Iranian shipping activity.

Iran, however, rejected these claims and instead accused the United States of breaking the ceasefire first. Tehran stated that US forces allegedly struck a civilian-linked oil tanker within Iranian territorial waters and coordinated with regional partners in operations affecting coastal areas, including locations along Iran’s southern shoreline.

Iranian forces further claimed that US naval vessels retreated from the area after sustaining damage, though American officials denied that any US ships were hit in the exchanges.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy chokepoint, remains a central flashpoint in the dispute, with both sides presenting sharply contrasting accounts of recent military actions and responsibility for the latest escalation.
