Turkish Business Group Calls for Revival of Türkiye–EU Membership Talks

(MENAFN) A Turkish foreign economic organization has launched a renewed public diplomacy effort urging European leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, to restart Türkiye’s long-stalled European Union membership process, arguing that closer integration is strategically essential.

As part of a broader campaign aligned with Europe Day, the group published an open letter in a major German newspaper. This follows earlier outreach efforts made through international financial media earlier this year.

The organization called for what it described as a fundamental shift in approach after years of stagnation in accession negotiations. It argued that Türkiye’s deeper inclusion in Europe’s economic, security, and defense structures is increasingly necessary given current global challenges, including migration pressures, demographic changes, rapid advances in artificial intelligence, and energy transition demands.

The letter also framed Türkiye’s potential EU membership as critical for Europe’s ability to function as a global power. In this context, it referenced what it described as Merz’s outlook at a recent security-focused international conference.

It also stressed that Turkish businesses are already closely embedded in European supply chains and argued that establishing a credible pathway toward membership would help rebuild trust and strategic alignment between Brussels and Ankara.

The group further called for urgent modernization of the customs framework between Türkiye and the EU, stating that updating it is vital for maintaining competitiveness amid growing geopolitical fragmentation.

Mehmet Ali Yalcindag, head of the organization’s Europe-focused business council, said the initiative would continue through additional open letters in major newspapers across several European countries, including France, Italy, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

“We deem the future of Türkiye-EU relations as not just an economic partnership but a strategic necessity,” he said.

He also added that the group plans to expand its outreach through engagement with universities, civil society organizations, and think tanks in order to promote its position among European stakeholders.
