Erdogan Warns Against US-Iran Escalation

(MENAFN) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday warned against any further escalation of hostilities between Washington and Tehran, stressing that Ankara has no appetite for a broader regional conflict ignited by the two powers' ongoing confrontation.

Erdogan delivered the remarks during a face-to-face meeting in Istanbul with Masrour Barzani, prime minister of Iraq's Kurdish Regional Government (KRG), according to Türkiye's Communications Directorate. The two leaders reviewed the rapidly shifting landscape across the region throughout their discussions.

Voicing alarm over strikes hitting Iraqi soil — including the northern city of Erbil — Erdogan made clear that Türkiye firmly rejects any spillover of the US-Iran standoff into neighboring states. He further pledged that Ankara would stand in full solidarity with the KRG throughout this turbulent period.

The Turkish president also underscored Iraq's pivotal role in underpinning regional stability, arguing that the prompt assembly of Iraq's central government would reinforce the country's national unity and institutional cohesion.

Erdogan reaffirmed Ankara's resolve to deepen ties with both Baghdad and Erbil, with particular emphasis on expanding collaboration across trade, transportation and energy sectors. He highlighted the Development Road Project as a transformative initiative poised to deliver sweeping economic dividends — not only for Iraq, but for Gulf nations as well.

Closing on a domestic note, Erdogan reiterated Türkiye's unwavering commitment to its "Terror-Free Türkiye" initiative, framing it as a cornerstone of Ankara's broader vision for peace and stability at home and throughout the wider region.
