UN Warns Strait of Hormuz Clashes Mark Critical Moment for De-escalation
(MENAFN) The United Nations on Friday expressed concern over reported exchanges of fire in the Strait of Hormuz, describing the situation as a “critical moment” for de-escalation amid rising regional tensions.
UN spokesperson Farhan Haq told reporters that the Secretary-General is closely monitoring the developments.
“What I can tell you is that the secretary-general is concerned by the reported recent exchange of fire in the Strait of Hormuz,” Haq said.
“He underscores that this is a critical moment for de-escalation, and urges all sides to exercise maximum restraint to avoid further escalation,” he added.
The UN also called on all parties to fully respect any existing ceasefire arrangements and to avoid actions that could trigger renewed hostilities.
“There is an effort underway,” Haq said when asked about ongoing diplomatic mediation, noting that discussions continue regarding ways to reduce tensions and reopen access through the strategic waterway.
The remarks come as reports of renewed confrontations between US and Iranian forces in and around the Strait of Hormuz have heightened international concern over potential further escalation.
