Germany Moves to Ban Disposable E-Cigarettes Over Waste Plant Fire Risks

(MENAFN) Germany is preparing legislation to ban disposable e-cigarettes, the environment minister announced Friday, pointing to a rise in fires at waste processing facilities linked to the devices.

Environment Minister Carsten Schneider said the federal government plans to present a draft bill to parliament in the coming months that would effectively prohibit the sale of single-use vaping products across the country.

Authorities say the products are often thrown away in regular household waste or recycling streams instead of being treated as electronic waste. Schneider explained that the lithium-ion batteries contained inside the plastic devices can be damaged when crushed or punctured by sorting equipment, creating a fire hazard.

He warned that this situation poses serious safety risks for sanitation and waste facility workers during the sorting process.

Beyond the immediate dangers, he also said disposable e-cigarettes are inconsistent with Germany’s environmental goals and long-term recycling policies.
