UN Experts Call for Release of Activists Detained in Gaza Aid Flotilla Raid
(MENAFN) UN experts on Friday demanded the immediate release of activists who were detained after Israeli forces intercepted a humanitarian aid flotilla bound for Gaza in international waters in late April.
In a statement, the experts expressed being “seriously concerned” over the seizure of 22 civilian vessels and the detention of 180 individuals, which reportedly took place around 500 nautical miles from Israel’s coast on April 29.
They said, “The attack against a civilian flotilla engaged in a peaceful and strictly humanitarian mission to deliver life-saving goods to the Palestinian people is further evidence that Israel is determined to continue its genocidal policy of suffocating the population of Gaza by any means necessary.”
The experts described the interception as “a blatant violation of international law,” citing the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. They also criticized Greek authorities, saying they did not respond to distress calls from the flotilla despite the vessels being within Greece’s search-and-rescue zone, and for permitting Israeli forces to carry out the intervention.
