France Sets New Caledonia Provincial Elections for June 28

(MENAFN) French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu announced Friday that provincial elections in New Caledonia will take place on June 28 after France’s National Assembly declined to review a constitutional reform proposal connected to the Bougival agreement.

“The State will organize them on June 28 with all necessary guarantees of neutrality and security,” Lecornu said in a video statement shared on the social media platform X.

Speaking to residents of New Caledonia, Lecornu said the government now considers the territory’s political impasse, along with its worsening economic and social situation, an urgent matter requiring immediate attention.

He explained that discussions resumed after the National Assembly refused to examine the constitutional reform bill, despite the measure previously receiving first-reading approval in the Senate.

“The bill could ultimately have failed to pass after debate, that is democracy,” he noted. “But instead, a procedural rejection prevailed.”
