Trump Declares Three-Day Russia-Ukraine Truce, Prisoner Deal
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump declared Friday that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a short-term ceasefire alongside a significant prisoner swap, calling it a possible turning point in a war that has dragged on for years.
"I am pleased to announce that there will be a three day ceasefire (May 9th, 10th, and 11th) in the War between Russia and Ukraine," Trump said on Truth Social.
The pause in hostilities, Trump outlined, would encompass "a suspension of all kinetic activity" paired with a reciprocal exchange of 1,000 prisoners from each side.
"This request was made directly by me, and I very much appreciate its agreement by (Russian) President Vladimir Putin and (Ukrainian) President Volodymyr Zelenskyy," he said.
"Hopefully, it is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard fought War. Talks are continuing on ending this Major Conflict, the biggest since World War II, and we are getting closer and closer every day," he added.
The announcement followed a meeting in Miami between US special envoy Steve Witkoff, Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, and Ukraine's chief negotiator Rustem Umerov. The talks centered on accelerating the diplomatic process and mapping out coordinated next steps toward a lasting peace.
The Miami meeting came as momentum in Kyiv-Moscow negotiations had visibly stalled — a slowdown compounded by the global spotlight shifting toward the US-Israeli conflict against Iran, which has drawn significant international attention away from the Russia-Ukraine war in recent months.
Tensions have further complicated the diplomatic landscape, with Russia and Ukraine trading mutual accusations over alleged violations of a separate two-day ceasefire that Moscow had declared to coincide with its May 9 Victory Day commemorations.
