US Senator Demands Immediate Halt to Iran War as Gas Prices Soar
(MENAFN) US Senator Bernie Sanders issued an unambiguous call Friday for an immediate halt to the US war with Iran, citing a dramatic spike in gasoline prices that he says is crushing working-class American families.
Sanders pointed directly to the economic fallout triggered since President Donald Trump launched hostilities on Feb. 28, noting that pump prices have surged sharply in the months since.
"Since Trump launched the war on Iran, gas prices have jumped from $2.98 to $4.55 a gallon. Working families can't afford that," Sanders wrote on X, the US-based social media platform.
"We need to invest in the needs of the American people, not spend billions on an unconstitutional war. This war must end now," he added.
The conflict erupted on Feb. 28 when US and Israeli forces launched coordinated strikes against Iran, prompting retaliatory action from Tehran and severe disruptions to shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz — a chokepoint handling roughly 20% of global oil flows. Fighting has since been placed on hold, with Pakistan currently mediating efforts to forge a permanent ceasefire.
Sanders' remarks add fresh political pressure on the Trump administration, which is already navigating growing domestic discontent over fuel costs, with recent polling showing a clear majority of Americans viewing military involvement in Iran as a mistake.
