UN Says Iran’s UAE Strike Risks Regional Stability
(MENAFN) The United Nations issued a stark condemnation Tuesday of escalating missile and drone attacks against the United Arab Emirates and commercial vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz, raising the alarm over the prospect of a full regional conflagration.
"We are deeply concerned that multiple missiles and drones were launched at the United Arab Emirates on May 4, which reportedly resulted in three people injured and caused a fire at an oil facility in the Fujairah oil industry zone," UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told reporters at a press conference.
Dujarric compounded the warning by disclosing that "several strikes targeting vessels took place in and around the Strait of Hormuz in recent days," a development he said was "significantly raising the danger of renewed hostilities in the region."
The UN spokesperson issued an urgent appeal to all parties involved. "Amid an increasingly strained cessation of hostilities, we call on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from any action which could escalate tensions and undermine ongoing diplomatic and mediation efforts," Dujarric said. He further stressed that "there is no viable alternative to the peaceful settlement of international disputes in full accordance with international law, including the charter of the United Nations."
On the ground, the Fujairah Media Office confirmed Monday that a devastating fire erupted at the Fujairah Oil Industry Zone — a strategically vital energy hub situated along the UAE's eastern coastline — after the site was struck by a drone launched from Iran. Three Indian nationals sustained moderate injuries in the attack and were hospitalized for treatment.
The strikes represent the latest flashpoint in a region that has been on edge since US and Israeli forces launched strikes against Iran on Feb. 28, setting off a chain of retaliatory actions by Tehran targeting Israel and US-aligned Gulf states, alongside the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
