Google Launches Major AI Hub Initiative in India with USD15B Investment

(MENAFN) Google has officially begun work on a major artificial intelligence hub in southern India, marking a significant step in the country’s push to expand its digital and technological capabilities.

The foundation ceremony took place in Visakhapatnam, located in Andhra Pradesh, with India’s Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and other senior officials in attendance. Highlighting the pace of progress, Vaishnaw described the development as a major milestone achieved within a notably short timeframe, saying, “It's indeed a very significant start that we are doing. What is significant is the very short time frame on which everything has come to this stage today.”

In a recorded message, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian described the initiative as a long-term strategic effort aligned with India’s national development goals. He said the project serves as a “strategic blueprint designed to fuel the government's Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.”

Viksit Bharat refers to India’s ambition to become a fully developed nation by 2047. As part of this effort, Google plans to deploy advanced AI capabilities across the country. Kurian emphasized the scale of the initiative, stating, “We're deploying a full AI stack to empower every Indian consumer and every enterprise with immense compute power and the tools to lead the world.”

He also stressed the company’s commitment to strengthening the local ecosystem, noting, “We're committed to investing in the local ecosystem to uplift business and entrepreneurs and advance skills development to create a sustainable future.”

According to the company, the planned hub will integrate key technological components, including high-capacity data centers, advanced AI infrastructure, expanded fiber-optic connectivity, and new large-scale energy systems in a single location.

The initiative builds on earlier plans announced last October, when Google pledged to invest approximately $15 billion in India over a five-year period to support AI and digital infrastructure development.

The move comes alongside similar commitments from other tech giants. Microsoft, for example, has also announced a major investment in India, with CEO Satya Nadella previously stating plans to allocate $17.5 billion toward the country’s technological growth.
