Six Hospitalized as Engine Failure Grounds Swiss Air Flight in Delhi
(MENAFN) Six passengers were hospitalized Sunday after Swiss International Airlines flight LX 147, bound for Zurich, aborted its takeoff at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi following an engine malfunction that prompted a full emergency declaration.
The Delhi airport confirmed a full emergency had been declared, adding: "All prescribed safety protocols were promptly executed, and passengers were safely evacuated. Airport operations remained unaffected."
Swiss Airlines disclosed that 228 passengers and four infants were aboard the aircraft when a technical problem emerged with one of the engines shortly after the takeoff sequence began.
"The crew rejected the take-off and, following an assessment of the situation, decided as a precaution to evacuate the aircraft," the airline said, adding that six passengers were currently receiving medical attention and the crew was unharmed.
a Local broadcaster corroborated reports of six passengers sustaining injuries and being transferred to hospital for treatment.
A firsthand account posted to X by Aakarsh Gupta, who identified himself as a passenger aboard the flight, described a harrowing sequence of events. He wrote that there was a "massive blast-like sound" suddenly and "Within seconds, the pilots slammed the brakes hard on the runway." He added that the engine caught fire and everyone onboard was evacuated.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the nature or cause of the engine fault. An investigation into the incident is expected to be initiated by aviation safety officials.
