Iran’s FM Meets Pakistan Army Chief to Revive Stalled Peace Talks

(MENAFN) Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi sat down with Pakistan's army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir in Islamabad on Saturday, as diplomatic efforts intensified to breathe new life into stalled peace negotiations aimed at ending an eight-week war between Washington and Tehran.

A brief video posted by the Iranian embassy on social media platform X confirmed the meeting also brought together Pakistan's Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, National Security Adviser and head of Inter-Services Intelligence Lt. Gen. Asim Malik, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei, and Iran's ambassador Reza Amiri Moghadam.

While the embassy disclosed no further details, Pakistani sources told media that the discussions centered on the possibility of a second round of Washington-Tehran talks in the days ahead.

Araghchi touched down in Pakistan late Friday in a visit that Pakistani officials say could lay the groundwork for renewed negotiations. A first round of talks convened in Islamabad two weeks ago, but ended without a breakthrough — itself a product of the ceasefire Pakistan brokered on April 8, which US President Donald Trump subsequently extended.

Beyond his meeting with Field Marshal Munir, Araghchi is also scheduled to hold separate discussions with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.

On the American side, the White House confirmed that US special envoy Steve Witkoff and presidential adviser Jared Kushner are set to travel to Pakistan on Saturday.

A significant diplomatic hurdle, however, looms over the process: Iran has categorically refused to engage in direct talks with the US, instead indicating that its positions will be relayed through Islamabad as an intermediary.
