UK prime minister pledges support for Arctic security alongside NATO
(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer reiterates that the UK is ready to contribute to Arctic security alongside NATO, emphasizing support for Greenland’s self-determination, according to statements released on Wednesday.
During a phone call with European Council President Antonio Costa on Tuesday, Starmer underlined that “the future of Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark alone.”
“He reiterated that the UK is prepared to play its part to protect Arctic security, alongside NATO,” the prime minister’s office says, noting that the leaders also discussed recent developments in Greenland and broader Arctic security.
Starmer and Costa agreed on the critical importance of maintaining defense and security cooperation in what they described as “volatile times.”
The call takes place amid US President Donald Trump’s controversial pursuit of Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory, citing its strategic position, abundant mineral resources, and concerns about growing Russian and Chinese activity. Trump has refused to rule out the use of force to acquire the island and circulated imagined images to support his claim. Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected any sale offers, reaffirming Danish sovereignty.
Meanwhile, France, Denmark, Sweden, and Germany are strengthening their military presence in Greenland through exercises and reconnaissance missions. Critics argue that Trump’s push to acquire the territory risks destabilizing the Western alliance, which benefits rival powers such as China and Russia. They add that existing treaties already allow US forces and bases on the island, making a takeover unnecessary to defend it from external threats.
