Iranian Shadow Fleet Ship Redirected to Iran After U.S. Interception
(MENAFN) The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced Saturday that American naval forces have intercepted a sanctioned merchant vessel in the Arabian Sea, redirecting it back toward Iran as Washington tightens its grip on Iranian energy exports through an active maritime blockade.
CENTCOM disclosed via X—the US-based social media platform—that the cargo ship M/V Sevan is among 19 vessels recently blacklisted by the US Treasury Department as part of a crackdown on what officials describe as an Iranian "shadow fleet" covertly moving energy commodities to international buyers.
Authorities say the Sevan had been instrumental in ferrying "billions of dollars worth of Iranian energy, oil and gas products, including propane and butane" across global waters, effectively circumventing longstanding US sanctions.
The interception was carried out by a US Navy helicopter deployed from the guided-missile destroyer USS Pinckney (DDG 91), which tracked and boarded the vessel in the Arabian Sea.
"Sevan was intercepted … and is currently complying with US military direction to turn back to Iran under escort," CENTCOM stated.
Officials further confirmed that enforcement operations remain ongoing, with American forces actively monitoring all maritime traffic entering and departing Iranian ports.
"Thirty-seven vessels have been redirected since the start of the blockade," CENTCOM said, signaling an escalating pattern of naval interdictions as Washington intensifies economic pressure on Tehran.
No information regarding the fate of the Sevan's crew or the precise status of its cargo has been released in the wake of the interception.
