Kremlin Says Russia Never Closed Door to Dialogue

(MENAFN) Russia has never closed the door to diplomatic engagement, but Moscow frequently finds its overtures met with silence from European counterparts, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Monday.

Addressing reporters at a briefing, Peskov said Moscow viewed favorably recent remarks by select European figures—among them Rumen Radev, leader of the Progressive Bulgaria coalition—who have advocated for pragmatic engagement with Russia.

"We welcome this. We also believe that any existing contradictions, any inconsistencies in mutual interests, can and should be resolved only at the negotiating table," he said.

Despite the encouraging signals from individual politicians, Peskov cautioned against reading too much into isolated voices, warning that a continent-wide shift in posture remains a distant prospect.

"I think it would be premature to draw such broad conclusions about a change in the pan-European climate; after all, we see statements of a completely different nature coming from Brussels," he added.

Turning to the Middle East, Peskov expressed cautious hope that the ongoing negotiation process would hold, while painting a sobering picture of the current situation, describing it as "very fragile" and "practically unpredictable." He stressed the importance of preventing a return to what he called a "violent scenario."

Moscow, he clarified, is not presently serving as a mediator in the conflict but signaled Russia's readiness to step in and facilitate an agreement between the parties should the need arise.

The remarks come against a backdrop of heightened regional diplomacy. On Feb. 28, the US and Israel launched military operations against Tehran, prompting Iran to strike back against US assets and installations across the Middle East. A ceasefire took hold on April 8, and Islamabad subsequently hosted the highest-level US-Iran talks since the severance of diplomatic ties in 1979 on April 11–12—though the negotiations ended without a concrete outcome.

President Trump has since announced that a US delegation will travel to Pakistan for a second round of talks with Iran. Tehran, however, has yet to officially confirm its participation in another round of the Islamabad talks.
