India, Sri Lanka Advance Talks on Cross-Border Oil Pipeline
(MENAFN) According to reports, India and Sri Lanka have held discussions on developing a proposed oil pipeline that would link the two countries, marking a step forward in broader energy cooperation between the South Asian neighbours.
The talks took place during a high-level meeting between Indian Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, where officials also reviewed wider areas of bilateral cooperation, including housing initiatives and long-standing issues related to fishing rights and maritime activity.
An Indian foreign ministry official noted that several ongoing and previously discussed initiatives were addressed during the meeting, including plans connected to an energy hub in Trincomalee and the idea of establishing a direct oil pipeline between India and Sri Lanka. He indicated that these proposals form part of a broader framework aimed at strengthening regional energy infrastructure.
The pipeline project has reportedly been under discussion since 2023 and also involves participation from the United Arab Emirates. In 2025, the three countries are said to have signed an agreement outlining plans to develop both the pipeline link and an oil storage facility in Trincomalee, with the broader goal of creating a regional energy hub supported by Indian and Emirati investment.
Officials highlighted that the discussions are taking place against the backdrop of global energy instability, underscoring the strategic importance of improving regional supply connectivity.
The recent visit by the Indian vice president was described as the first of its kind to Sri Lanka, and Sri Lankan leadership reportedly used the opportunity to acknowledge India’s support during past crises, including economic difficulties in 2022 and natural disaster response efforts in later years.
In addition to energy cooperation, both sides also reviewed ongoing development projects, financial assistance initiatives, and digital infrastructure plans, including discussions on a proposed digital identity system and an economic and technology cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening long-term bilateral ties.
