French ship receives warning shots in Strait of Hormuz

(MENAFN) A container vessel operated by French shipping company CMA CGM came under what were described as “warning shots” while passing through the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, the company confirmed on Sunday. All crew members were reported safe, and no injuries occurred, although the ship sustained some damage.

The company identified the vessel as the CMA CGM Everglade, a French-flagged container ship.

It said the ship remained operational despite damage being limited to several containers.

According to reports cited by maritime authorities and the International Maritime Organization, the incident occurred north of Kumzar in Oman, though the exact extent of the damage was not fully detailed. No environmental pollution was reported.

The incident reportedly involved multiple commercial ships in the area, with some vessels claiming they were fired upon while transiting the strategic waterway. The situation comes amid heightened tensions in the region following recent disruptions affecting maritime movement.

As stated by reports, Iranian authorities had recently reimposed restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz in response to broader geopolitical tensions, including a US blockade of Iranian ports, which Tehran described as a retaliatory measure.

Despite the incident, the CMA CGM vessel continued its voyage, with the company confirming that operational capability had not been significantly affected beyond the damaged cargo containers.
