Israeli Military Death Toll Hits Sixteen Since February 28

(MENAFN) Sixteen Israeli soldiers have been killed and 690 others wounded since February 28 in a string of attacks tied to Iran and Lebanon, according to military figures released Sunday.

The Israeli military disclosed that among the 690 wounded, 96 sustained serious injuries and 42 are in critical condition, while the remaining soldiers suffered moderate or minor wounds. As of Sunday, 149 soldiers are still receiving hospital care.

Within the last 24 hours alone, 37 additional soldiers were injured — the majority "as a result of explosive devices," the military stated, offering no details on the locations involved.

The reported figures remain impossible to confirm through independent channels, as Israel enforces stringent controls over information pertaining to casualties inflicted by Iranian and Hezbollah forces.

Separately on Sunday, the Israeli newspaper Maariv reported that two soldiers were killed and 12 more wounded across two distinct explosive device incidents along what military circles call the "Yellow Line" — a de facto boundary stretching between 4 and 10 kilometers into Lebanese territory, running parallel to the internationally recognized Blue Line border.

Maariv drew a stark historical parallel, noting that the "threat of roadside bombs in Lebanon had been a nightmare that haunted every fighter and every unit operating in the south during the 1980s and 1990s, when the Israeli army was bogged down in the Lebanese quagmire."

The current hostilities intensified following a joint US-Israeli military campaign against Iran that launched on February 28, subsequently spilling into Lebanon on March 2. In response, Iran and Hezbollah unleashed waves of missiles and drones at Israeli positions while also striking US bases and assets across the region.

A two-week ceasefire between Washington and Tehran came into effect on April 8, though no comprehensive peace agreement has been finalized. US President Donald Trump separately announced a 10-day ceasefire arrangement covering Lebanon.
