Argentine Leader to Open His Country’s Embassy to Israel in Jerusalem
(MENAFN) Argentine President Javier Milei arrived in Israel on Sunday for an official visit expected to culminate in the opening of Argentina’s embassy in Jerusalem, according to a news outlet.
Milei held talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later in the day, with both leaders delivering joint statements following their meeting, the outlet reported.
The two sides also finalized agreements focused on security cooperation and artificial intelligence, further strengthening bilateral ties.
During his visit, Milei will open his country's embassy to Israel in Jerusalem, the newspaper added.
The trip marks Milei’s third visit to Israel since assuming office in December 2023, with his return to Argentina scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
The Argentine leader first revealed his intention to relocate the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem during a February 2024 visit to Israel, later reaffirming in November that the move would be completed in the spring.
Only a limited number of countries currently operate embassies in Jerusalem, including the United States, Kosovo, Honduras, Guatemala, Papua New Guinea, and Paraguay.
Most nations have declined to relocate their diplomatic missions, viewing such a move as implicit recognition of Israel’s unilateral claim over the city as its capital.
Palestinians, however, continue to consider East Jerusalem the capital of a future state, citing international resolutions that do not acknowledge Israel’s occupation of the city in 1967 or its annexation in 1980.
