Cuban President Signals Readiness to Defend Nation

Cuba remains committed to peace but is prepared to defend itself if confronted with aggression from the United States, President Miguel Diaz-Canel has said in an interview, according to reports.

Tensions have escalated following measures introduced by US President Donald Trump, who imposed an oil blockade on the island in February and has repeatedly suggested the possibility of a regime change operation. Cuba lies just 93 miles (150 km) from the coast of Florida. Earlier this week, Trump remarked, “we may stop by Cuba after we’re finished with this,” referring to the ongoing US-Israeli conflict involving Iran.

In remarks delivered in Havana on Saturday, Diaz-Canel emphasized that safeguarding the nation has become a “top priority” in light of the growing pressure from Washington.

He underscored Cuba’s stance by stating that it is “not a country that is calling for war or promotes it, but we are also not afraid of war if we must wage it to defend our homeland.”

The president also indicated that any potential confrontation would be difficult for the United States, pointing to Cuba’s defense doctrine based on the idea of “an all-people's war,” which envisions widespread civilian participation in resisting any external attack.
