Trump Hold Phone Talks with Pakistan's Munir, Iran Negotiators

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump held phone conversations this week with Pakistani army chief Gen. Asim Munir and Iranian negotiators, US media reported, as diplomatic efforts to prevent a renewed war intensify ahead of a critical ceasefire deadline.

The calls took place during Munir's three-day visit to Tehran, which began Wednesday, according to a news outlet, citing unnamed US officials. "Pakistani army chief Asim Munir held mediation talks between the US and Iran in Tehran this week, and US officials said Trump spoke by phone at least once with Munir and the Iranians," the outlet reported.

During his Tehran trip, Munir held meetings with both civil and military leadership, including Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and Maj. Gen. Ali Abdollahi, commander of the Khatam ul Anbiya headquarters.

The disclosure emerged as Trump convened a White House Situation Room meeting Saturday to assess the fallout from the renewed closure of the Strait of Hormuz — a development rattling global energy markets. A fragile two-week ceasefire is set to expire on April 22, with no confirmed date yet for a fresh round of negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

Iran had declared the vital waterway open during Munir's Tehran visit, only to shut it again Saturday after Trump announced that the US blockade of Iranian ports would remain in place.

Pakistani, US, and Iranian sources are converging on the expectation that a second round of talks will be held in Islamabad as early as next week, though no official announcement on timing has been made by any of the parties involved.

Pakistan hosted the landmark first direct engagement between Washington and Tehran on April 11 and 12 — the highest-level contact between the two sides since 1979 — though those talks ended without a conclusive agreement. The anticipated second round is expected to involve technical-level teams from both sides, with Pakistani government sources indicating the teams could convene in Islamabad "most probably on Monday" to work toward a final deal.
