GCC Head Calls for Stable Iran Relations, End to Regional Conflict

(MENAFN) The secretary-general of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has called for continued engagement with Iran, stressing that diplomatic dialogue is essential to prevent further escalation in the region.

Speaking at a panel titled A Middle East Beyond Zero-Sum Politics during the Antalya Diplomacy Forum, Jassem Albudaiwi said Gulf states have long worked toward improving relations with Tehran and pursuing normalization efforts.

“Our attempt to normalize and have a decent relationship with Iran is not something new,” he said, referring to a series of initiatives over the years aimed at easing regional tensions.

He noted that Gulf countries are seeking a constructive relationship with Iran built on shared commitments to regional peace and stability.

“A partner that believes in peace and stability. A partner that believes that whatever will happen will affect the whole world,” he said.

Albudaiwi warned that continued confrontation could have serious and far-reaching consequences, emphasizing the need to prioritize diplomatic solutions over escalation.

“What we hope for now is the success of the dialogue … otherwise God knows what will happen,” he said, adding that failure to reach understanding would be “a disaster” not only for Gulf states but for the wider international community.

He further urged global actors to actively support negotiations, stating that “all the international community needs to use the leverage to reach a peaceful solution.”
