Marian Goodman's Prized $65 Million Collection Lands At Christie's

(MENAFN- USA Art News) Christie's to Sell Marian Goodman's Collection, Led by Richter Works Estimated Up to $50 Million

Christie's will bring works from Marian Goodman's personal collection to New York next month in a series of sales expected to total about $65 million. The offering, titled“Breaking Ground: The Private Collection of Marian Goodman,” is anchored by seven paintings by German artist Gerhard Richter (b. 1932), including a 1982 candle painting estimated at $35 million to $50 million.

The Richter group, which spans works made between 1982 and 2009, will open Christie's 21st-century evening sale on May 20. The auction house said the collection reflects Goodman's long relationship with the artist, whom she began representing in 1985, when his market in the United States was still developing despite strong critical and commercial standing in Germany.

Christie's described Goodman's collecting as an act of close attention over time, noting that she retained“prime examples” from major junctures in Richter's practice. The candle motif is among the artist's best-known images, and one related work appeared on the cover of Sonic Youth's 1988 album Daydream Nation.

The sale will continue with a single-owner day sale on May 21, while an online sale running from May 8 to May 22 will feature works from Goodman's earlier Multiples platform. That section includes pieces by John Baldessari, Andy Warhol, Dan Flavin, and Richard Artschwager, with estimates from $800 to $35,000.

Christie's will preview highlights from the collection in Paris, London, and Los Angeles before the New York exhibition at Rockefeller Center. Goodman, who founded her gallery in 1977 on West 57th Street, died in January in Los Angeles at age 97. Her collection now offers a concentrated view of the artists and ideas she helped shape, and of the market history that followed.
