Polish F-16S Intercept Russian Reconnaissance Aircraft In Baltic Sea
“On April 8, 2026, a duty pair of F-16 Polish Air Force fighters carried out a successful interception, visual identification, and escorting from the area of responsibility of a Russian Federation aircraft that was conducting a flight over the Baltic Sea. Polish fighters intercepted an Il-20 Russian aircraft carrying out a reconnaissance mission in international airspace, without a filed flight plan and with its transponder turned off. There was no violation of Polish airspace,” the post reads.
The interception of aircraft is not a demonstration of force but a basic tool for ensuring effective control over the country's airspace. Its purpose is the rapid identification of objects that do not respond to calls from air traffic control, are flying without the required flight plan, or are violating applicable regulations, the command added.

These actions help limit the risk of incidents and ensure the safety of both civilian air traffic and critical infrastructure.
