US Sends Envoy, Kushner to Islamabad for Ceasefire Talks with Iran
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump’s Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, and his son-in-law Jared Kushner are expected to represent the US in upcoming talks with Iran in Islamabad, reports indicate. The negotiations are scheduled to begin Friday after Pakistan helped secure a ceasefire between the two sides.
On the Iranian side, Tehran may be represented by senior diplomat Abbas Araghchi and parliament speaker Bagher Ghalibaf, according to reports citing officials familiar with the matter.
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, who played a central role in negotiating the end to 39 days of conflict, is also expected to participate in the talks. There has been no official announcement from either country regarding their delegations.
Trump appeared to confirm that Witkoff and Kushner would attend the discussions, while noting to the media that US Vice President Vance might skip the talks “there’s a question of safety, security.” He added that the in-person negotiations would occur “very soon, actually -- it’s going to take place very soon.”
Earlier Wednesday, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran, covering the conflict-hit region.
