UN Envoy Arrives in Iran to Support Diplomatic Push for Regional Peace
(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ Personal Envoy, Jean Arnault, has arrived in Iran as part of a regional tour designed to push forward diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing Middle East conflict, according to reports.
"Acting on the Secretary-General’s instructions, he is visiting countries across the region to support all efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive and durable resolution to the conflict," a UN statement said.
The ceasefire agreement, brokered with the involvement of Pakistan and other mediators in the conflict initiated by the US and Israel against Iran, was praised in the statement for creating "space for diplomacy to advance towards ending the war."
While in Tehran, Arnault is scheduled to meet with Iranian officials to gain insight into their perspective on potential solutions. He will also communicate Guterres’ personal "commitment to making every effort to support a peaceful settlement."
"The Personal Envoy trusts that, in line with the Charter of the United Nations and international humanitarian law, all leaders will choose the path of peaceful resolution and the protection of civilians over a continued conflict," the statement added.
