Seat Belts In The UAE ... Still A Long Way To Go! 2026 UAE Seat Belt Survey Part 1 (Adults)
| 'Do you think, seat belts protect drivers and front-seat passengers in cars in case of accidents?' | ||

| 'Do you think, seat belts protect back-seat passengers in cars in case of accidents? | ||
| Yes | No | Not sure |
| 82% | 6% | 13% |
B) USAGE BY DRIVERS:
86% of drivers state, they 'always' buckle up. This is a low number, taking into consideration that drivers not only should know about the law mandating a 100% seat belt wearing rate, but also that we all hold a valid driving license and we studied this vital subject during our driving education!
| 'When you drive a car, how often do you use your seat belt? | ||||
| Never | Rarely | Sometimes | Often | Always |
| 1% | 3% | 5% | 5% | 86% |
C) USAGE BY FRONT SEAT PASSENGERS:
86% of front seat passengers 'always' use their seat belt. Like for drivers, this is a low rate! It is somehow surprising, considering the much higher values (95%) of understanding the protective powers of seat belts.
| 'When you sit in the front seat as a passenger, how often do you use your seat belt? | ||||
| Never | Rarely | Sometimes | Often | Always |
| 1% | 3% | 5% | 5% | 86% |
D) USAGE BY REAR-SEAT PASSENGERS:
A truly alarming figure is the use of seat belts by rear-seat passengers: only 24% state they 'always' use seat belts!
| 'When you sit in the back seat (for example in taxis, or in friend's cars), how often do you use your seat belt? | ||||
| Never | Rarely | Sometimes | Often | Always |
| 17% | 21% | 26% | 13% | 24% |
E) THE ROLE OF THE RESPONSIBLE DRIVER:
The research uncovers the role of the driver in asking and prompting passengers to buckle up. This makes a driver a responsible driver! Only 70% fall in the category of 'responsible' drivers.
| 'When you are the driver of a car, do you ask your passengers to use their seat belt? | ||||
| Never | Rarely | Sometimes | Often | Always |
| 2% | 3% | 11% | 14% | 70% |
F) REASONS FOR NOT USING THE SEAT BELT / NOT PROMOPTING PASSENGERS TO USE THE SEAT BELT:
In order to design targeted awareness and education initiatives, it is of paramount importance to understand the mindset for not using / not promoting the use of seat belts. These reasons must be addressed.
| 'You mentioned that you don't always wear your seat belt or ask your passengers to do so. Please tell us why? | |
| When I sit on the back seat, I feel safe enough without seat belt | 55% |
| On short trips, it is not needed to wear seat belts | 27% |
| Other safety features like airbags protect just as well as seat belts | 16% |
| Me as driver or whoever drives the vehicle is a safe driver and hence, there is no need for seat belts | 12% |

G) HISTORICAL TRENDS VS. 2017 (prior to the new holistic seat belt law)
In February 2017, prior to the introduction of the new holistic seat belt law which makes the use of seat belts mandatory also for passengers on the rear-seats as per 1st July 2017, RoadSafetyUAE conducted the same survey already. It is important to note, that all the surveyed dimensions are moving in the right direction, albeit not reaching the desired 100% mark which would be compliant with the law.
