Abu Dhabi Homeowners Can Now Generate, Store Electricity Through Rooftop Solar Systems

In a move that brings solar power directly to households for the first time, the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy has expanded its self-supply policy to include the residential sector, allowing villa owners and certain residential buildings to generate and store their own electricity.

The announcement marks the second phase of the emirate's Solar Energy Self-Supply Policy, widening its scope beyond farms, rest houses and ranches, which were covered under the first phase launched earlier this year.

Under the expanded framework, homeowners can install rooftop solar systems and battery storage, enabling them to generate electricity and integrate its use with the grid.

Authorities said the new phase introduces a simplified regulatory framework, aimed at streamlining installation and grid connection procedures, while standardising technical requirements to ensure safety and operational efficiency.

The policy also allows users to store electricity through battery systems, helping them meet a significant share of their daily energy consumption during daylight hours.

The expansion reflects growing adoption of renewable energy solutions and aligns with broader efforts to meet rising energy demand through more efficient and flexible systems.

Alongside the rollout, authorities highlighted measures to promote energy-efficient consumption, including guidance on selecting and operating systems such as air conditioning, water heating, lighting and other electrical appliances based on performance and lifecycle cost.

Officials said the policy forms part of Abu Dhabi's wider strategy to enhance energy and water efficiency, improve system performance, and support the transition towards a more sustainable energy mix.
