Cubans Voice Shift Toward Capitalist Aspirations

(MENAFN) Sandro Castro, the grandson of revolutionary figure and former Cuban president Fidel Castro, expressed that a large portion of Cubans are leaning toward capitalist ideas. In an interview with CNN, published Monday, the 33-year-old stated, “There are many people in Cuba that think in a capitalistic way. There are many people here who want to do capitalism with sovereignty.”

He further emphasized this perspective, noting, “I think the majority of Cubans want to be capitalist, not communist,” highlighting what he sees as a growing ideological shift among the population.

Castro, who is also known as a social media personality residing in Havana, voiced concerns about Cuba’s economic conditions. He argued that the existing system requires reform and advocated for a more liberalized and open economy.

He described a decline in living standards across the country, pointing to recurring power outages, interruptions in water supply, and ongoing struggles to obtain essential goods, all of which have made everyday life increasingly challenging.

Additionally, Castro remarked that widespread dissatisfaction exists among citizens regarding the current state of affairs. He suggested that a possible agreement with Donald Trump could significantly reshape Cuba’s economic landscape.

Addressing the leadership, Castro criticized President Miguel Díaz-Canel, asserting that the present government has failed to achieve meaningful success.

He also revealed that Cuban State Security had called him in for questioning over videos and critiques he posted online. However, he was later released with a warning, as authorities determined that he had not encouraged violence or advocated for a change in the regime.
