Israel Approves Death Penalty For Palestinians Convicted Of Deadly Attacks
Israel's parliament passed the law on Monday, making death by hanging the default sentence for Palestinians convicted in military courts of carrying out deadly attacks, Reuters reported.
It said the measure includes provisions for execution within 90 days of sentencing, with limited scope for delay and no right to clemency.
Following the move, Palestinian Hamas and Islamic Jihad called on Palestinians to launch retaliatory attacks.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the legislation as a violation of international law and an attempt to intimidate Palestinians.
“Such laws and measures will not break the will of the Palestinian people or undermine their steadfastness,” Abbas' office said in a statement.
Meanwhile, prominent Israeli human rights groups denounced the law as“an act of institutionalised discrimination and racist violence against Palestinians.”
The Association for Civil Rights in Israel said it had filed an appeal with the country's Supreme Court against the legislation.
