In 1597, when winemaking was just beginning on the American continent, the first vineyards that would give rise to Casa Madero were planted in the Parras Valley, in northern Mexico. More than four centuries later, that history is coming to Costa Rica for the first time.

Starting this year, a selection of Casa Madero wines will begin to be sold in the country through the Costa Rican distributor Alpiste, marking a milestone for both the Mexican winery and the local food and beverage market. This marks Casa Madero's first direct entry into the country, as part of an expansion strategy aimed at strengthening the presence of Mexican wine in Latin America.

With 429 years of uninterrupted history, Casa Madero is not only the oldest winery in the Americas but also one of the few wineries in the world with a documented history dating back to the 16th century.

More Than Just a Market Entry: A Cultural Milestone

Casa Madero's entry into Costa Rica marks a significant moment for the local gastronomic ecosystem. It brings historical depth and international prestige to the offerings available in a country with an increasingly sophisticated culinary scene and a growing interest in wines with distinct identity and provenance.

“Costa Rica is a dynamic market, with consumers who are increasingly curious and knowledgeable. We are excited to share our history and our wines in a country with such a keen appreciation for food and wine,” said Oscar Cristerna, Export Manager at Casa Madero.

“The Parras Valley is a wine-growing oasis in the middle of the desert. Its elevation, Mesozoic-era marine soils, dry climate, and significant daily temperature range create ideal conditions for the slow ripening of the grapes, which concentrates aromas, preserves freshness, and gives rise to wines of great depth and character. Bringing that expression of Mexican terroir to Costa Rica is something that excites us deeply,” said Christian Rojas, Winemaker and Technical Director at Casa Madero.

Official Launch at Insurgente 21

The official launch took place on March 18 at the Insurgente 21 restaurant in San José, at an event that brought together opinion leaders from the culinary sector, specialized media, sommeliers, key clients, and diplomatic representatives, including the Mexican Ambassador to Costa Rica.

The wines that will be available in Costa Rica

The initial portfolio available in Costa Rica includes six wines that represent different expressions of the Parras Valley and was curated to complement the diversity and variety of Costa Rican cuisine.

. 3V: the winery's flagship blend, balanced and versatile at the table.

. V Rosé: fresh and vibrant, ideal for tropical climate and contemporary cuisine.

. Gran Reserva 3V: deep and structured, designed for more complex dishes.

. Gran Reserva Shiraz: intense and spicy.

. Organic Chenin Blanc: a fresh and sustainable expression of the vineyard.

. Malbec: fruity and elegant, with notes of plum and spices.

The selection aims to complement the diversity of Costa Rican cuisine, from seafood and vegetable dishes to meats and signature cuisine.

A Strategic Partnership with Alpiste

Casa Madero's entry into the country is being facilitated by Alpiste, a Costa Rican company specializing in the import and distribution of wines and premium products for restaurants, hotels, and specialty stores.

Through this partnership, Alpiste expands its portfolio by adding an internationally recognized brand, reinforcing its commitment to offering unique products with significant historical value to Costa Rican consumers.

“For Alpiste, representing Casa Madero means bringing the winery that pioneered wine in the Americas to the Costa Rican market. It is a brand that embodies history, prestige, and proven quality,” stated representatives from the distributor.

Casa Madero Today

Today, Casa Madero, the leader in Mexico's wine category, has a presence in countries across the Americas, Europe, and Asia.

The winery was a pioneer in obtaining Mexico's first organic vineyard certification. Today, under the leadership of the fifth generation of the Madero family, the winery combines tradition and innovation, with a strong focus on organic viticulture, sustainability, and precision winemaking.

Casa Madero's arrival in Costa Rica is not merely the introduction of a new label to the market. It marks the entry of a living history of the Americas into the national gastronomic landscape and reflects a commitment to gastronomically curious markets, where consumers seek origin, character, and authenticity in their glass.
