Arab League Names New Secretary-General

(MENAFN- Brazil-Arab News Agency (ANBA)) Cairo – The Council of the League of Arab States unanimously approved, on Sunday (29), the nomination of former Egyptian foreign minister Nabil Fahmy as the organization's new secretary-general.

Nominated by his country, Fahmy still needs to be formally approved at the next Arab League Summit in Saudi Arabia, attended by the countries' leaders. He will take office for a five-year term on July 1.

Fahmy will succeed Ahmed Aboul Gheit, whose second term ends on June 30, the Saudi state news agency SPA said. The organization represents the 22 Arab countries.

The decision was made at the 165th meeting of Arab foreign ministers, held by videoconference under Bahrain's presidency.
