Rainfall Boosts Soil Moisture, Supports Afghan Rain-Fed Crops: FAO

(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) KABUL (Pajhwok): The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) said on Monday that recent rainfall has increased soil moisture across many parts of Afghanistan, creating favourable conditions for rain-fed agriculture.

In a post on X, the FAO said that for the fourth consecutive week, widespread rainfall is expected across the country, with the heaviest downpours concentrated in parts of central, eastern and southeastern provinces, raising the risk of flash flooding.

The organisation noted that the recent rains have significantly improved soil moisture levels in many areas, which is beneficial for rain-fed cultivation and is expected to positively contribute to crop growth and development.

It added that temperatures in some regions may fall below zero degrees Celsius, maintaining the risk of frost damage to crops in northeastern, eastern, and central highland areas.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Authority reported on Sunday that over the past 24 hours, floods, landslides and lightning strikes across 13 provinces have caused at least 17 deaths, 26 injuries, and substantial financial losses.
