Trump Warns Iran of Destruction If Talks Do Not Yield Results
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump said on Monday that negotiations with Iran aimed at halting joint US-Israeli military strikes are moving forward, but issued a stark warning about Iran’s energy infrastructure if a deal is not quickly reached.
"If for any reason a deal is not shortly reached, which it probably will be, and if the Hormuz Strait is not immediately 'Open for Business,' we will conclude our lovely 'stay' in Iran by blowing up and completely obliterating all of their Electric Generating Plants, Oil Wells and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalinization plants!)," Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social.
Despite the threat, Trump stressed that "serious discussions" were underway with a "new and more reasonable" Iranian regime.
Meanwhile, Iran denied any direct negotiations with the US on Monday, stating that recent interactions were limited to messages exchanged via intermediaries. Regional nations have offered to mediate, with Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar indicating that Islamabad could host potential talks.
On Sunday, Trump backed diplomatic efforts, noting that intermediaries from Pakistan, Türkiye, and Egypt had engaged in indirect contacts between Washington and Tehran. He said that discussions through Pakistani "emissaries" were making headway, adding: "A deal could be made fairly quickly."
The conflict has been deadly: many senior Iranian officials were among the 1,340 killed in the US-Israeli air offensive against Iran on Feb. 28, including then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
In retaliation, Tehran has launched drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US forces, causing casualties, infrastructure damage, and disruptions to global markets and aviation.
