Economic Confidence Weakens Across EU, Euro Area in March

(MENAFN) Economic confidence across the European Union and the euro area weakened in March, official data revealed on Monday, highlighting growing uncertainty among businesses and consumers.

The European Commission reported that the Economic Sentiment Indicator fell by 1.5 points to 96.7 in the EU and by 1.6 points to 96.6 in the euro area. Similarly, the Employment Expectations Indicator dropped by 1.3 points to 97.3 in the EU and by 1.4 points to 96.4 in the euro zone. Both measures are now further below their long-term average of 100, reflecting a marked deterioration in overall economic outlook.

Consumer confidence also declined sharply, with the flash indicator plunging 3.4 points in the EU and four points in the euro area compared to February. Scores settled at minus 15.2 points for the EU and minus 16.3 points for the euro area, marking the lowest levels since October 2023, according to the commission.

The data signals growing caution among households and firms amid ongoing economic uncertainties in the region.
