Russia Eyes Deeper Gulf Ties Amid Escalating Mideast Tensions

(MENAFN) Russia is actively pursuing stronger partnerships with Gulf nations as the Middle East edges deeper into conflict, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told a state news agency on Sunday.

Peskov described Saudi Arabia and fellow Gulf states as Moscow's "good partners" and "good friends," stressing that these are countries "we want to develop bilateral cooperation with."

"We will continue to do this; we value our relations," he added.

The overture comes against the backdrop of a rapidly escalating regional war. The US and Israel launched a sustained air offensive against Iran on Feb. 28 — a campaign that has so far killed more than 1,340 people, among them former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Tehran has responded in kind, unleashing waves of drone and missile strikes against Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and multiple Gulf states where US military assets are stationed. The retaliatory strikes have inflicted casualties and widespread infrastructure damage, while simultaneously sending shockwaves through global financial markets and forcing significant disruptions to international aviation routes.

Moscow's diplomatic push toward Gulf capitals signals a strategic calculation to deepen its regional influence at a moment when the broader Middle East order is being fundamentally reshaped by the ongoing conflict.
