US Deploys Thousands of Marines, Sailors to Mideast Amid Rising Tensions

(MENAFN) The U.S. Central Command announced on Saturday that a contingent of approximately 3,500 Marines and sailors arrived in the Middle East on Friday, as stated by reports.

“U.S. Sailors and Marines aboard USS Tripoli (LHA 7) arrived in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility, March 27,” CENTCOM said in a brief post on social media platform X.

The USS Tripoli, an America-class amphibious assault ship, serves as the flagship for the Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group and the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, consisting of around 3,500 personnel along with transport and strike fighter aircraft, amphibious assault vehicles, and other tactical assets, according to CENTCOM.

This deployment is part of a wider U.S. military buildup linked to the ongoing war with Iran. The amphibious forces are capable of launching both sea-based attacks and ground operations, with the capacity for rapid deployment, securing strategic locations, evacuating personnel, or striking coastal targets, as stated by reports.

Reports also indicate that the Pentagon has been considering sending up to 10,000 additional ground troops to the region, providing U.S. President Donald Trump with expanded military options beyond diplomacy. The potential reinforcements are expected to include infantry units and armored vehicles, supplementing the roughly 5,000 Marines and thousands of 82nd Airborne Division paratroopers already stationed in the Middle East.

While the exact deployment locations remain unspecified, the forces are likely to be positioned within range of Iran and its Kharg Island, a key oil export hub, according to reports.
