Syria Denounces 'Terrorist Attack' on Kurdish Leader Residence

(MENAFN) Syria moved Sunday to formally denounce a drone strike targeting the home of Nechirvan Barzani, president of Iraq's Kurdish Regional Government (KRG), labeling the assault a "terrorist attack" and calling on regional actors to cease all armed interference in Iraqi affairs.

Syria's Foreign Ministry pinned responsibility on what it termed "outlaw groups," framing the strike as a direct threat to security and stability not only within Iraq but across the broader region — language that reflects growing alarm among neighboring governments over the deteriorating security landscape.

The ministry further condemned the attack as a violation of international law, reaffirming Damascus's stated commitment to Iraq's sovereignty and territorial integrity, while categorically rejecting any form of armed meddling in the country's internal affairs.

The targeted strike hit Barzani's residence in Duhok on Saturday, though officials confirmed no casualties resulted from the attack. Property damage was reported as limited, confined largely to areas near drone interception sites, according to initial assessments.

The assault on a senior regional leader's home is the latest flashpoint in a rapidly deteriorating security environment, sparked by the joint U.S.-Israeli offensive against Iran launched on Feb. 28 — a campaign that has so far claimed more than 1,340 lives, among them then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
