São Paulo Daily Brief For Thursday, March 19, 2026

(MENAFN- The Rio Times) Welcome to your São Paulo daily guide for Thursday, March 19, 2026. A wet, cooler day is heading your way - 25 °C with 60% rain - making this a perfect excuse to spend the morning inside the MASP, the Pinacoteca, or the IMS on Avenida Paulista. Clara Ianni's Sala de Vídeo at the MASP closes in four days, and the "HIP-HOP 80'sp" show at Sesc 24 de Maio enters its final week. Lollapalooza Brasil 2026 begins tomorrow at Interlagos, bringing three days of music and significant transport disruption to the southern zone. Brasileirão Round 7 starts tonight with Chapecoense hosting Corinthians at 21h30. On the financial side, the Copom cut the Selic to 14.75% last night - the first reduction in nearly two years - while the Fed held steady in Washington.

This is part of The Rio Times' daily São Paulo daily guide coverage for expats and the international community.

04 Getting Around How to move

Rodízio (vehicle restriction): Plates ending in 7 and 8 restricted today (Thursday) within the centro expandido, 7h–10h and 17h–20h.

Metrô SP: Line 2 (green) to Trianon-MASP. Line 1 (blue) or Line 4 (yellow) to Luz for the Pinacoteca. Line 4 to Paulista for IMS. Operating 4h40–midnight. The Metrô is the best option today given the rain.

Lollapalooza transport: The festival begins tomorrow at Autódromo de Interlagos. Southern-zone disruptions are expected from Friday through Sunday. If you live or commute through Santo Amaro, Interlagos, or Jurubatuba, plan alternative routes this weekend.

Ride apps: 99 and Uber available. Rain will increase surge pricing and wait times - the Metrô is the smarter choice for Paulista visits today.

05 Where to Eat Where to eat

Rainy-day Paulista lunch: The MASP café serves light meals even during museum hours. For something more substantial, the side streets off Paulista - Rua Augusta (Jardins side), Alameda Santos, Rua Haddock Lobo - are a 5-minute walk and packed with options from Japanese to contemporary Brazilian.

Near Pinacoteca (Luz): Mercado Municipal (Mercadão) is a 15-minute walk south - the famous mortadela sandwich is a rainy-day classic. Open Mon–Sat 6h–18h, Sun 6h–16h.

Covered markets: Mercado de Pinheiros (Rua Pedro Cristi, 89) is excellent on rainy days - craft beer, oysters, and contemporary Brazilian small plates under one roof.

06 Practical Info Need to know

Post-rate-cut impact: The Selic cut to 14.75% will filter through to consumer lending rates gradually. Credit card rates and personal loans typically adjust within 45 days. Mortgage rates for new contracts may begin to edge lower in the coming weeks.

Imposto de Renda 2026: Filing begins Sunday, March 23 - four days to prepare your documentation.

Pharmacies: Droga Raia and Drogasil across Jardins, Paulista, and Pinheiros. Many open 7h–22h. 24-hour branches on Av. Paulista and in major shopping centres.

Flooding risk: Heavy rain in São Paulo can cause localised flooding, particularly in low-lying areas near the Tietê and Pinheiros rivers. Avoid underpasses during intense downpours and check CET alerts if driving.

07 Community & Lifestyle Local life

Lollapalooza Brasil 2026 arrives tomorrow at the Autódromo de Interlagos and runs through Sunday. The festival is the city's biggest music event of the first half of the year, drawing over 100,000 attendees per day. If you are going, plan for heavy traffic in the Interlagos/Santo Amaro corridor from Friday afternoon onward. If you are not going, plan to avoid that corridor entirely.

The Neymar exclusion from Ancelotti's squad continues to generate debate. With the Brazil vs France friendly one week away (March 26), pundits are now shifting attention to which of the younger attackers - Endrick, Vinícius Júnior, Raphinha - will start.

Expat networking and language exchange events continue across Vila Madalena, Pinheiros, and Jardins. InterNations and Gringo São Paulo groups are good starting points for newcomers.

08 Game Day Game day

Brasileirão Série A - Round 7 begins tonight.

SP club fixture: Chapecoense vs Corinthians at 21h30 (Arena Condá, Chapecó). Corinthians travel to Santa Catarina looking to build momentum after a mixed start.

Also tonight: Grêmio vs Vitória at 19h (Arena do Grêmio, Porto Alegre). Other Round 7 fixtures continue through the weekend.

Seleção: Ancelotti's squad is in camp in the US ahead of Brazil vs France (March 26). Palmeiras academy product Endrick (Lyon), Vinícius Júnior, Raphinha, and Matheus Cunha lead the attack. Neymar excluded.

09 Business & Markets Market watch

Copom (last night): The Selic was cut 0.25 pp to 14.75% in a unanimous decision - the first reduction since May 2024. The Copom described it as "calibration" rather than the start of a sustained easing cycle, and left forward guidance deliberately open. The committee cited Middle East uncertainty, elevated oil prices, and inflation expectations above the target as reasons for caution. The BC raised its own 2026 inflation projection from 3.4% to 3.9%. Goldman Sachs noted the cut only happened because the Copom had pre-committed to it in January; otherwise, a hold would have been the default choice.

Federal Reserve (yesterday): Held at 3.50%–3.75% (11-1 vote, Miran dissented in favour of a cut). The dot plot projects one cut in 2026. Powell warned of "not as much progress on inflation as we hoped" and said the oil crisis may have "transitory" effects. US PPI came in at +0.7% (vs +0.3% expected). The Dow fell 1.63%, S&P 500 dropped 1.36%.

Wednesday markets: The Ibovespa fell during the session ahead of the decisions, pressured by the Fed's hawkish tone and rising oil prices. The USD/BRL closed around R$ 5.24–5.26, rising after the Fed announcement. Eneva surged approximately 14% after a major energy capacity auction.

What to watch today: Markets will digest both central bank decisions simultaneously. The DI curve will reprice for the Copom's cautious tone, while equity traders assess whether the Selic cut offsets the hawkish Fed. Expect volatility.

Oil: Brent remains elevated above $100, with Iran's Hormuz threats keeping supply fears alive despite limited actual shipping disruption.
