Doha, Qatar: The evolving geopolitical developments in the region have reinforced the deep cooperation between Qatar and the United Kingdom, strengthening the partnership further, British Ambassador to Qatar H E Neerav Patel said.

In an exclusive interview with The Peninsula, reaffirming London's long-standing commitment to the region, Ambassador Patel said that the UK will remain“a steady and reliable ally” while working closely with partners, particularly Qatar, to pursue a diplomatic resolution to the conflict.

He highlighted the strength of bilateral ties, noting that the relationship between the two countries is rooted in shared history, trust and strong people-to-people connections.

“We've got a really strong relationship. It's exceptional. It's based on shared history, trust, common interests, and a unique people-to-people relationship,” he said.“The tests of the current moment, the current tensions, have deepened that cooperation, strengthened it, and shown its real value at all levels.”

According to Ambassador Patel, cooperation between the two governments has intensified during the crisis.“I delivered a message of solidarity from His Majesty the King to His Highness the Amir, and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is in contact with His Highness. There isn't a day that goes by without ministerial or high-level interaction between our two countries,” he said.

The ambassador also pointed to practical defence cooperation, particularly the joint Typhoon squadron operated by the Royal Air Force and the Qatar Amiri Air Force.

“From the very first day of this conflict, British and Qatari pilots have been flying together in the skies above us, keeping us safe,” Ambassador Patel said.

“For us, there was no question about providing support. It's quite simple: friends show up.”

The British Ambassador described the squadron as a unique partnership.“It's the Royal Air Force's first joint squadron since the Second World War anywhere in the world, and still the only one we have,” he said.“It's based on real operational excellence, and over the years, it has built a bond between our pilots that is almost familial.” Ambassador Patel said the immediate priorities for the UK mission in Qatar are twofold: supporting regional security and helping find a path to end the war.

“Right now, there are two things that are my priorities as British Ambassador in Qatar,” he said.“Firstly, supporting and defending Qatar and the people here, as well as our Gulf allies. Secondly, finding a path to the end of this war.”

“Our priority is stability and security, and we will continue to take a calm, level-headed approach,” he said.“We weren't involved in the initial offensive against Iran, and we are not taking offensive action. But when Iran began firing against our allies and UK interests, we took defensive action to protect them.” Despite the security challenges, Patel stressed that diplomacy remains the ultimate path forward.

“The UK has a reputation built over decades as a steady and reliable ally, and we will continue to be so,” he said.“But ultimately, we want to see a resolution to the conflict as soon as possible. Diplomacy is the main tool for resolving conflicts, and we will work with all our partners, especially Qatar, given its expertise in mediation and peacebuilding, to try and achieve that outcome.” He spoke with assured optimism about the power of diplomacy in easing tensions.“I'm a born optimist,” he said.“To do this job well, you have to be constantly looking for a positive path forward.”

In this situation, ensuring the safety of British nationals in Qatar is also a key priority for the embassy, Ambassador Patel said, noting that around 25,000 British citizens live in the country.“The safety and well-being of British nationals is my priority,” he said.“We've been maintaining clear, regular communication with the British community through our travel advice and embassy channels.”

To support these efforts, a rapid deployment team of consular and communications experts has been sent to assist the embassy in outreach across the region. Ambassador Patel also praised the support of Qatari authorities and national institutions.“The response by the Qatari government to the crisis has been excellent,” he said.“We're extremely grateful for their steady and wise leadership in keeping the British community safe, supported and informed.”

He also commended the national carrier Qatar Airways for its role during the crisis.“They have been brilliant partners, helping keep the world moving and assisting stranded nationals of many countries, including the UK,” he said.

Looking ahead, the ambassador said the partnership between the two countries will continue to serve as a stabilising force in the region.

“There's a special relationship between the UK and Qatar, and it's a relationship that is reliable,” Ambassador Patel said.“It has proven to be a source of stability at a time when the region needs it.”

He concluded with a message of solidarity to the people of Qatar, saying that the relationship between Qatar and the UK is deep-rooted and goes beyond agreements between governments, reflecting the connections between the two countries' peoples and institutions built over generations.

“My message to the people of Qatar is very simple: we're with you, we will be with you, and we can take on these challenges together.”
