Brett Whalen

Brett Edward Whalen works on Christian intellectual and cultural history during the European Middle Ages, including topics such as the crusades, apocalyptic though, pilgrimage, and the history of the papacy. In addition to four books, he has published widely in journals that include The American Historical Review, Traditio, and Viator. He is currently writing a new book, Medieval Jesus: The Son of God and the Making of the Middle Ages, which explores changing representations of Jesus Christ across the medieval era. Whalen is also in the early stages of joint project with Jay Rubenstein (USC), Joachim of Fiore's Book of Figures: Translation and Commentary, which will offer the first English translation of and commentary on the Book of Figures, by the famous twelfth-century apocalyptic thinker, Joachim of Fiore.
Whalen presently holds the Zachary Smith Distinguished Term Professorship and is serving as the lead editor of Church History: Studies in Christianity and Culture.
