I specialise in the history of ideas (also referred to as intellectual history), particularly relating to the history of archaeology, exploration and travel. In practice, most of my work is about the history of Egyptology, especially about the contribution made by the Regency-era Egyptologist John Gardner Wilkinson. Contrary to popular belief, there is a lot that we simply do not know about the history of Egyptology; new sources are coming to light all the time, in places ranging from public libraries to Victorian stately homes. One of my most interesting findings has been that, even in the 18th and 19th centuries, scholars were interested in environmental change and in reconstructing ancient landscapes – something that we usually only usually associate with the 20th century. My work has been published by peer-reviewed academic journals including the Journal of Historical Geography and the Royal Society, as well as wider-circulation publications including Ancient Egypt Magazine and Nile Magazine.
Currently I am based at the University of Leicester; I spend most of my time focusing on a Leverhulme-funded project about how Egyptologists (predominantly British and French) use maps to present their findings. I have also taught modern British history and digital research methods.
