Farewell Ceremony for Iran’s Slain Supreme Leader Begins in Capital

(MENAFN) A public farewell ceremony for Iran’s slain Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, is scheduled to begin Wednesday evening in the capital following his death in a US-Israeli airstrike.

The announcement was made by the head of Tehran’s Islamic Propagation Coordination Council, the authority tasked with arranging national commemorations. He said the ceremony will start at 10 p.m. local time (1830 GMT) at Imam Khomeini Mosalla, the large prayer venue traditionally used for Friday congregational services.

Organizers stated that Khamenei’s body will lie in honor at the Mosalla for three days, during which the public will be allowed to enter and offer their condolences. A series of religious and cultural events has been planned throughout the mourning period, beginning Wednesday night.

Following the three-day observance, a funeral procession will be held. Officials indicated that preparations are still ongoing and that further details will be released once arrangements are finalized.

Reports about the burial site remain inconsistent. However, some accounts suggest that Khamenei may be interred in Mashhad in northeastern Iran, where he was born. The city is also home to the shrine of Imam Reza, a significant pilgrimage destination, where Khamenei’s father — a respected cleric of his era — is buried.

In addition to the late leader, several of his family members who were killed in the same strike — including his wife, daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren — are expected to be laid to rest on the same day.

They were among those killed during the opening phase of the US-Israeli offensive launched Saturday, which has reportedly resulted in nearly 800 deaths across the country, including 165 schoolchildren in the southern city of Minab.
